For my job shadow interview, I went on a ride along with a police officer. I chose to do this because I’m stuck between wanting to become a teacher or going into the Law Enforcement and I thought going on a ride along would be a fun and interesting experience for me. I got to observe an officer on duty and was able to experience what the job is really like.
During the job shadow I've seen many things I’d never seen before. First, we began around sundown on a Saturday. This experience was definitely life changing for me; I observed people who were highly under the influence of the worst kinds of drugs out there. The way these people behaved was incredibly insane. During the interview, we began a chase on a man who was being abusive to his wife under the influence of methamphetamine and other drugs. When the officers finally caught him, they tackled him to the floor and seated him in the cop car directly behind me. The man started to curse at the cops and was banging his head over and over against the glass window in front of him.
It is a tragic to see people's entire lives change all because of drugs. I've always known drugs were no good, but to see a person who has been using right in front of my eyes definitely scared me and taught me a valuable lesson, and showed me the kind of lifestyle to avoid. I couldn't say I disliked anything during this experience. I loved every bit of this job shadow interview because everything taught me life lessons and why it is important to try your best in life and do everything you could to succeed.
At the moment, I am still not sure if I am interested in going into the Law Enforcement or becoming a teacher. I am definitely interested in both careers, but I think in time, the more I am able to become more observant and persistent I am about my future within time right after high school, the more settled and prepared I will become on choosing my dream job.
